When I first got into collecting, I was honestly rather shocked at the price ranges for figures (anime, Marvel, DC, fantasy, etc.). Some were super cheap, while others cost more than a trip to Italy! This definitely made me wonder: why are some figures so freaking expensive, and how do people afford these things? Lastly, are they even worth it? In this blog post, I’ll break down what drives the high price of collectible figures, what you get for your money, and how to decide whether they’re worth the investment.

Why Are Collectible Figures Expensive?

1.Premium Materials and Manufacturing Quality

Ever pick something up at Target or GameStop and it feels like it would fall apart in your hands? High-end collectible figures aren’t made from that kind of cheap plastic. Most are crafted from durable materials like PVC, ABS, resin, or polystone. These materials offer greater detail, smoother finishes, and longer lifespans—which means if you accidentally drop one, the odds of it completely breaking are very low.

Additionally, sculpting and painting are usually done by hand, and the figures go through multiple rounds of design and refinement. I’ve seen some 1/7 scale figures that just blew me away with the detail and color quality.

2. Limited Edition and Small Production Runs

Most figures are produced in the tens of thousands, but smaller batches can be as low as 100 units. This allows the manufacturer to demand a higher price because of the figure’s scarcity. Any collector knows that exclusivity and rarity create value with the right demographic. That’s why some collectors seek out specific figures as investments too!

3. Licensing and Branding Fees

A key thing to remember about your favorite fandoms is that someone, somewhere owns that character. For any manufacturer to produce a figure from a fandom, they have to pay licensing fees to the studios, artists, or IP holders. These costs are factored into the price and help ensure the product is officially approved and authentic.

However, you’ll find companies that create bootleg figures without paying a license—making the figure much cheaper. Be aware of these companies, especially online. They often claim to offer quality figures, but they’re just sad rip-offs. Check out my other blog post about identifying bootlegs or fake figures.

4. Packaging and Presentation

Nobody wants to spend their hard-earned money and receive a figure stuffed in a damaged, ugly box! High-quality, expensive figures are presented in premium packaging with secure cushioning, artwork, and collector-friendly design. Some even include certificates of authenticity or interchangeable parts, which adds to their appeal.

I’ve seen some collectors display the boxes themselves because they’re so gorgeous that you wouldn’t want to hide them away in storage.

5. Import Fees and Shipping Costs

Many high-end figures are produced in Japan and China, with both countries shipping them worldwide. Importing can result in high shipping charges, customs fees, and taxes—especially for collectors outside of Asia. With tariffs placed on imports, it can be expensive for individuals to purchase directly from overseas.

When purchasing from a retailer, be aware that these costs are included in the price and passed on to the consumer.

Where to start with your figure collecting?

1. Do your research: Check reviews, unboxing videos, and community feedback.

2. Buy from trusted retailers: Stick to stores like My Anime Box, AmiAmi, Good Smile Company, Solaris Japan, or local shops that specialize in licensed figures.

3. Avoid bootlegs: If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Bootlegs have inferior quality and hurt the creators.

4. Set a collecting budget: High-end collecting can add up quickly. Make sure it fits within your means.

Fandom figures can be expensive, but when you understand what goes into the cost—from materials and craftsmanship to licensing and rarity—it starts to make sense. For many collectors, the joy of owning a beautifully crafted figure of a beloved character is worth every penny. Whether you’re investing in your favorite anime or your never-ending love for Marvel, the choice comes down to what brings you happiness. And in the world of fandom, that’s often priceless. Happy collecting!
